and then it’s his turn. It’s tradition in Dan’s family to be thrown in the lake during celebration moments. Also tradition to put up a serious fight. Nothing like cousin pink to comfort a soaking soul.

a little bit of summit in new york city

Posted in event, location on May 5th, 2010 by Julie Furbush – 6 Comments

Work sent me to new york city a couple weeks ago for another spiritual activist summit. The weekend was a great one; particularly for the amazing conversations and the central park time in between. This time of year: beautiful nyc.

in indianapolis with college summit

Posted in event, portraits on April 8th, 2010 by Julie Furbush – 7 Comments

This last summer I posted some photos I took while volunteering as a writing coach with College Summit, a non-profit organization that helps low-income kids get to college. In that post, you saw a few of the students with whom I worked closely over the course of four days to write heartfelt personal essays. College Summit flew me to Indianapolis a few weeks ago to capture more of the same spirit. In this post, you’ll see many more students - all headed toward college - in two high schools in Indianapolis. The day was a great one, and College Summit still rocks everybody’s socks off. Volunteering during their summer workshops is an incredible experience; you’ve got to do it at least once in your life!

these shots are moments (and textures) spread out over Furbush family time during thanksgiving and Christmas. Tennis, touch-football, trip to the zoo, and lauren on her laptop after a spontaneously set taco bell-dinner table in a closed shopping center parking lot. You know, the usual.

the ultimate elephant women alumni weekend

Posted in event on November 18th, 2009 by Julie Furbush – Be the first to comment

Tufts’ mascot is Jumbo, the elephant. Our school’s ultimate teams are accordingly, the Elephant Women and the Elephant Men. Now you know. The sun was out for us and it wasn’t too cold! Ewo Alumni played undergrads and then we mixed teams according to.. can you guess? Size of butts. So, you’ll see us placing ourselves accordingly, you’ll see a pirate, a very real layout (and a real support team for that layout), some ewo jerseys from classes ago, some ultimate, and some happy team.

Some design this time

Posted in event on November 11th, 2009 by Julie Furbush – 2 Comments

As you might know already, I’ve been doing some more design lately. Below are two projects that I’ve been working on these last two weeks. Here’s a glimpse at my design process as well; you’ll see the foundation photograph, which is my first step into the design, and then the final result.

The first project is a poster for a benefit concert that my sister is helping to organize in her high school. Her philanthropy class is raising $7000 over the semester to help a school in Kenya buy a water well. Their fund-raising goal for this concert, one of Lauren’s projects, is $1000. If you feel inspired by the design or the mission to give even $5, Lauren Furbush takes checks.

The second is a poster for Dan who was inspired by these two words and wanted to see them manifested on his wall. If you’re interested in having your own copy of this poster, I would love to help get it printed for you for a $10 service fee - proceeds go to buying a well in Kenya. Just let me know!

twitter told me about a candlelight vigil fast enough for me to make it down the block and around the corner as the local troops marched into my Davis Square, Somerville, somber, serious, honoring. The light was wonderful everywhere. The beauty of sorrow still tempts me, catches me, mushes my heart up. It was a great night on the town.
